2 Kings 4:1 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 A man from the group of prophets had a wife. This man died, and his wife cried out to Elisha, "My husband was like a servant to you. Now he is dead! You know he honored the Lord. But he owed money to a man. Now that man is coming to take my two boys and make them his slaves!"
2 Elisha answered, "How can I help you? Tell me, what do you have in your house?" The woman said, "I don't have anything in the house except a jar of olive oil."
3 Then Elisha said, "Go and borrow bowls from all your neighbors. They must be empty. Borrow plenty of bowls.
4 Then go to your house and close the doors. Only you and your sons will be in the house. Then pour the oil into all the bowls. Fill them, and put them in a separate place."
5 So the woman left Elisha, went into her house, and shut the door. Only she and her sons were in the house. Her sons brought the bowls to her and she poured oil.
6 She filled many bowls. Finally, she said to her son, "Bring me another bowl." But all of the bowls were full. One of the sons said to her, "There aren't any more bowls." Then the oil in the jar was finished!
7 When she told the man of God what had happened, Elisha said to her, "Go, sell the oil and pay your debt. You and your sons can live on the money that is left."
8 One day Elisha went to Shunem, where an important woman lived. She asked Elisha to stop and eat at her house. So every time Elisha went through that place, he stopped there to eat.
9 The woman said to her husband, "Look, I can see that Elisha is a holy man of God. He passes by our house all the time.
10 Please, let's make a little room on the roof for him. Let's put a bed in this room and a table, a chair, and a lampstand. Then when he comes to our house, he can have this room for himself."
11 One day Elisha came to the woman's house. He went to this room and rested there.
12 Elisha said to his servant Gehazi, "Call this Shunammite woman." The servant called the Shunammite woman, and she stood in front of Elisha.
13 Elisha told his servant, "Now say to her, 'Look, you have done your best to take care of us. What can we do for you? Do you want us to speak to the king for you, or to the captain of the army?'" She answered, "I am fine living here among my own people."
14 Elisha said to Gehazi, "What can we do for her?" He answered, "I know! She does not have a son, and her husband is old."
15 Then Elisha said, "Call her." So Gehazi called the woman. She came and stood at his door.
16 Elisha said, "About this time next spring, you will be holding your own baby boy in your arms." The woman said, "No, sir! Man of God, don't lie to me!"
17 But the woman did become pregnant and gave birth to a son that next spring, just as Elisha had said.
18 The boy grew. One day the boy went out into the fields to see his father and the men cutting the grain.
19 The boy said to his father, "Oh, my head! My head hurts!" The father said to his servant, "Carry him to his mother!"
20 The servant took the boy to his mother. The boy sat on his mother's lap until noon. Then he died.
21 The woman laid the boy on the bed of Elisha, the man of God. Then she shut the door to that room and went outside.
22 She called to her husband and said, "Please send me one of the servants and a donkey. Then I will go quickly to get the man of God and come back."
23 The woman's husband said, "Why would you want to go to the man of God today? It isn't the New Moon or Sabbath day." She said, "Goodbye!"
24 Then she put a saddle on a donkey and said to her servant, "Let's go, and hurry! Go slow only when I tell you."
25 The woman went to Mount Carmel to get the man of God. The man of God saw the Shunammite woman coming from far away and said to his servant Gehazi, "Look, there's the Shunammite woman!
26 Please run now to meet her! Say to her, 'Are you all right? Is your husband all right? Is the child all right?'" She answered, "Everything is all right."
27 But the Shunammite woman went up the hill to the man of God. She bowed down and touched Elisha's feet. Gehazi came near to pull her away. But the man of God said to Gehazi, "Leave her alone! She's very upset, and the Lord didn't tell me about it. The Lord hid this news from me."
28 Then she said, "Sir, I never asked for a son. I told you, 'Don't trick me'!"
29 Then Elisha said to Gehazi, "Get ready to go. Take my walking stick and go! If you meet anyone along the way, don't even stop to say hello to him. If anyone says hello to you, don't answer. Put my walking stick on the child's face."
30 But the child's mother said, "I promise, as the Lord lives and as you live, I will not leave without you!" So Elisha got up and followed her.
31 Gehazi arrived at the house before Elisha and the Shunammite woman. Gehazi laid the walking stick on the child's face, but the child did not talk or show any sign that he heard anything. Then Gehazi came back to meet Elisha and said, "The child will not wake up!"
32 Elisha went into the house, and there was the child, lying dead on his bed.
33 Elisha went into the room and shut the door. He and the child were alone in the room now. Then he prayed to the Lord.
34 Elisha went to the bed and lay on the child. He put his eyes on the child's eyes, his mouth on the child's mouth, his hands on the child's hands. He lay there on top of the child until the child's body became warm.
35 Then Elisha turned away and walked around the room. He went back and lay on the child until the child sneezed seven times and opened his eyes.
36 Elisha called Gehazi and said, "Call the Shunammite woman!" Gehazi called her, and she came to Elisha. Elisha said, "Pick up your son."
37 Then the Shunammite woman went into the room and bowed down at Elisha's feet. Then she picked up her son and went out.
38 Elisha went to Gilgal again. There was a famine in the land. The group of prophets was sitting in front of Elisha. Elisha said to his servant, "Put the large pot on the fire, and make some soup for the group of prophets."
39 One man went out into the field to gather herbs. He found a wild vine and picked the fruit from it. He put that fruit in his robe and brought it back. He cut up the wild fruit and put it into the pot. But the group of prophets did not know what kind of fruit it was.
40 Then they poured some of the soup for the men to eat. But when they began to eat the soup, they shouted out, "Man of God! There's poison in the pot!" The food tasted like poison, so they could not eat that food.
41 But Elisha said, "Bring some flour." He threw the flour into the pot. Then he said, "Pour the soup for the people so that they can eat." And there was nothing wrong with the soup.
42 A man from Baal Shalishah came and brought bread from the first harvest to the man of God. This man brought 20 loaves of barley bread and fresh grain in his sack. Then Elisha said, "Give this food to the people, so that they can eat."
43 Elisha's servant said, "What? There are 100 men here. How can I give this food to all those men?" But Elisha said, "Give the food to the people to eat. The Lord says, 'They will eat and there will still be food left over.'"
44 Then Elisha's servant put the food in front of the group of prophets. The group of prophets had enough to eat, and they even had food left over. This happened just as the Lord had said.

2 And Elisha H477 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her , What H4100 IPRO shall I do H6213 for thee ? tell H5046 me , what H4100 IPRO hast H3426 thou in the house H1004 ? And she said H559 W-VQY3MS , Thine handmaid H8198 hath not H369 NPAR any thing H3605 CONJ in the house H1004 , save H518 PART a pot H610 of oil H8081 CMS .
3 Then he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go H1980 , borrow H7592 thee vessels H3627 abroad H2351 of all H3605 NMS thy neighbors H7934 , even empty H7386 vessels H3627 ; borrow not a few H4591 .
4 And when thou art come in H935 , thou shalt shut H5462 the door H1817 upon H1157 W-PREP thee and upon H1157 W-PREP thy sons H1121 , and shalt pour out H3332 into H5921 PREP all H3605 NMS those H428 D-DPRO-3MP vessels H3627 D-NMP , and thou shalt set aside H5265 that which is full H4392 .
5 So she went H1980 W-VQQ3FS from him , and shut H5462 the door H1817 upon H1157 W-PREP her and upon H1157 W-PREP her sons H1121 CMP-3FS , who H1992 PPRO-3MP brought H5066 the vessels to H413 PREP-3FS her ; and she H1931 poured out H3332 .
6 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the vessels H3627 D-NMP were full H4390 , that she said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP her son H1121 , Bring H413 PREP me yet H5750 ADV a vessel H3627 . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP her , There is not H369 NPAR a vessel H3627 more H5750 ADV . And the oil H8081 stayed H5975 .
7 Then she came H935 W-VQY3FS and told H5046 the man H376 L-NMS of God H430 D-EDP . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Go H1980 , sell H4376 the oil H8081 , and pay H7999 thy debt H5386 , and live H2421 thou H859 and thy children H1121 of the rest H3498 .
8 And it fell H1961 W-VPY3MS on a day H3117 D-AMS , that Elisha H477 passed H5674 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Shunem H7766 , where H8033 W-ADV was a great H1419 AFS woman H802 NFS ; and she constrained H2388 him to eat H398 bread H3899 NMS . And so it was H1961 W-VPY3MS , that as oft H1767 as he passed by H5674 , he turned in H5493 VQY3MS thither H8033 ADV-3FS to eat H398 bread H3899 NMS .
9 And she said H559 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP her husband H376 NMS , Behold H2009 IJEC now H4994 IJEC , I perceive H3045 VQY1MS that H3588 CONJ this H1931 PPRO-3MS is a holy H6918 man H376 NMS of God H430 EDP , which passeth by us continually H8548 .
10 Let us make H6213 VHI1MP a little H6996 chamber H5944 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , on the wall H7023 ; and let us set H7760 for him there H8033 ADV a bed H4296 , and a table H7979 , and a stool H3678 , and a candlestick H4501 : and it shall be H1961 W-VQQ3MS , when he cometh H935 to H413 us , that he shall turn in H5493 VQY3MS thither H8033 .
11 And it fell H1961 W-VQY3MS on a day H3117 D-AMS , that he came H935 W-VQY3MS thither H8033 ADV-3FS , and he turned H5493 W-VHY3MS into H413 PREP the chamber H5944 , and lay H7901 W-VQY3MS there H8033 .
12 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Gehazi H1522 his servant H5288 , Call H7121 W-VQY3MS this H2063 D-DFS Shunammite H7767 . And when he had called H7121 W-VQY3MS her , she stood H5975 before H6440 him .
13 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto him , Say H559 W-VQY3MS now H4994 IJEC unto H413 PREP her , Behold H2009 IJEC , thou hast been careful H2729 for H413 PREP us with H854 PREP all H3605 NMS this H2063 D-DFS care H2731 ; what H4100 IPRO is to be done H6213 L-VQFC for thee ? wouldest H3426 I-ADV thou be spoken H1696 for to H413 PREP the king H4428 D-NMS , or H176 CONJ to H413 PREP the captain H8269 of the host H6635 ? And she answered H559 W-VQY3MS , I H595 PPRO-1MS dwell H3427 among H8432 B-NMS mine own people H5971 .
14 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 W-IGAT then is to be done H6213 L-VQFC for her ? And Gehazi H1522 answered H559 W-VQY3MS , Verily H61 she hath no H369 ADV child H1121 NMS , and her husband H376 is old H2204 .
15 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Call H7121 W-VQY3MS her . And when he had called H7121 W-VQY3MS her , she stood H5975 in the door H6607 .
16 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , About this H2088 D-PMS season H4150 , according to the time H6256 KD-NMS of life H2416 AFS , thou H859 shalt embrace H2263 a son H1121 NMS . And she said H559 W-VQY3MS , Nay H408 NPAR , my lord H113 , thou man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , do not lie H3576 unto thine handmaid H8198 .
17 And the woman H802 D-NFS conceived H2029 W-VQY3FS , and bore H3205 W-VQY3FS a son H1121 NMS at that H2088 D-PMS season H4150 that H834 RPRO Elisha H477 had said H1696 VPQ3MS unto H413 PREP-3FS her , according to the time H6256 KD-NMS of life H2416 AFS .
18 And when the child H3206 was grown H1431 , it fell H1961 W-VQY3MS on a day H3117 D-AMS , that he went out H3318 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS to H413 PREP the reapers H7114 .
19 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP his father H1 CMS-3MS , My head H7218 CMS-1MS , my head H7218 CMS-1MS . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP a lad H5288 , Carry H5375 him to H413 PREP his mother H517 CFS-3MS .
20 And when he had taken H5375 him , and brought H935 him to H413 PREP his mother H517 GFS-3MS , he sat H3427 W-VQY3MS on H5921 PREP her knees H1290 till H5704 PREP noon H6672 , and then died H4191 W-VQY3MS .
21 And she went up H5927 W-VHY2MS , and laid H7901 him on H5921 PREP the bed H4296 of the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , and shut H5462 the door upon H1157 him , and went out H3318 .
22 And she called H7121 W-VQY2MS unto H413 PREP her husband H376 NMS , and said H559 W-VQY3FS , Send H7971 me , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , one H259 MMS of H4480 PREP the young men H5288 D-NMP , and one H259 of the asses H860 , that I may run H7323 to H5704 PREP the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , and come again H7725 .
23 And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Wherefore H4069 IPRO wilt thou H859 go H1980 to H413 PREP-3MS him today H3117 D-AMS ? it is neither H3808 ADV new moon H2320 , nor H3808 W-NADV sabbath H7676 . And she said H559 W-VQY3MS , It shall be well H7965 .
24 Then she saddled H2280 an ass H860 , and said H559 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP her servant H5288 , Drive H5090 , and go forward H1980 ; slack H6113 not H408 NPAR thy riding H7392 for me , except H518 PART I bid H559 VQQ1MS thee .
25 So she went H1980 W-VQQ3FS and came H935 W-VQY3FS unto H413 PREP the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP to H413 PREP mount H2022 CMS Carmel H3760 . And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , when the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP saw H7200 K-VQFC her afar off H5048 M-PREP , that he said H559 W-VQY3MS to H413 PREP Gehazi H1522 his servant H5288 , Behold H2009 IJEC , yonder is that H1975 Shunammite H7767 :
26 Run H7323 now H6258 ADV , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , to meet H7122 her , and say H559 unto her , Is it well H7965 with thee ? is it well H7965 with thy husband H376 ? is it well H7965 with the child H3206 ? And she answered H559 W-VQY3FS , It is well H7965 .
27 And when she came H935 W-VQY3FS to H413 PREP the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-NAME-4MP to H413 PREP the hill H2022 , she caught H2388 him by the feet H7272 B-CFD-3MS : but Gehazi H1522 came near H5066 to thrust her away H1920 . And the man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP said H559 W-VQY3MS , Let her alone H7503 ; for H3588 CONJ her soul H5315 is vexed H4843 within her : and the LORD H3068 W-EDS hath hid H5956 it from H4480 M-PREP-1MS me , and hath not H3808 W-NPAR told H5046 VHQ3MS me .
28 Then she said H559 W-VQY3FS , Did I desire H7592 a son H1121 of my lord H113 ? did I not H3808 ADV say H559 VQQ1MS , Do not H3808 NADV deceive H7952 me ?
29 Then he said H559 W-VQY3MS to Gehazi H1522 , Gird up H2296 thy loins H4975 , and take H3947 my staff H4938 in thine hand H3027 , and go thy way H1980 : if H3588 CONJ thou meet H4672 any man H376 NMS , salute H1288 him not H3808 NADV ; and if H3588 CONJ any H376 NMS salute H1288 thee , answer H6030 him not H3808 NADV again : and lay H7760 my staff H4938 upon H5921 PREP the face H6440 CMP of the child H5288 .
30 And the mother H517 GFS of the child H5288 said H559 W-VQY3FS , As the LORD H3068 EDS liveth H2416 AMS , and as thy soul H5315 liveth H2416 , I will not H518 PART leave H5800 thee . And he arose H6965 W-VQY3MS , and followed H1980 W-VQY3MS her .
31 And Gehazi H1522 passed on H5674 VQQ3MS before H6440 CMP them , and laid H7760 W-VQY3MS the staff H4938 upon H5921 PREP the face H6440 CMP of the child H5288 ; but there was neither H369 W-NPAR voice H6963 CMS , nor H369 W-NPAR hearing H7182 . Wherefore he went again H7725 to meet H7122 him , and told H5046 him , saying H559 L-VQFC , The child H5288 is not H3808 NADV awaked H6974 .
32 And when Elisha H477 was come H935 W-VQY3MS into the house H1004 , behold H2009 IJEC , the child H5288 was dead H4191 , and laid H7901 upon H5921 PREP his bed H4296 .
33 He went in H935 W-VQY3MS therefore , and shut H5462 W-VQY3MS the door H1817 upon H1157 PREP them twain H8147 ONUM-3MP , and prayed H6419 W-VTY3MS unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
34 And he went up H5927 W-VHY3MS , and lay H7901 W-VQY3MS upon H5921 PREP the child H3206 , and put H7760 W-VQY3MS his mouth H6310 upon H5921 PREP his mouth H6310 , and his eyes H5869 W-CFD-3MS upon H5921 PREP his eyes H5869 CMD-3MS , and his hands H3709 upon H5921 PREP his hands H3709 : and he stretched H1457 himself upon H5921 PREP the child ; and the flesh H1320 CMS of the child H3206 waxed warm H2552 .
35 Then he returned H7725 , and walked H1980 W-VQY3MS in the house H1004 to and fro H259 OFS ; and went up H5927 W-VHY3MS , and stretched H1457 himself upon H5921 PREP-3MS him : and the child H5288 sneezed H2237 seven H7651 MFS times H6471 NFP , and the child H5288 opened H6491 his eyes H5869 .
36 And he called H7121 W-VQY3MS Gehazi H1522 , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Call H7121 W-VQY3MS this H2063 D-DFS Shunammite H7767 . So he called H7121 W-VQY3MS her . And when she was come H935 W-VQY3FS in unto H413 PREP him , he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Take up H5375 thy son H1121 .
37 Then she went in H935 W-VQY3FS , and fell H5307 W-VQY3FS at H5921 PREP his feet H7272 , and bowed herself H7812 to the ground H776 NFS-3FS , and took up H5375 her son H1121 , and went out H3318 .
38 And Elisha H477 came again H7725 VQQ3MS to Gilgal H1537 : and there was a dearth H7458 in the land H776 B-NFS ; and the sons H1121 W-CMP of the prophets H5030 were sitting H3427 before H6440 L-CMP-3MS him : and he said H559 W-VQY3MS unto his servant H5288 , Set on H8239 the great H1419 D-AFS pot H5518 , and seethe H1310 pottage H5138 for the sons H1121 L-CMP of the prophets H5030 .
39 And one H259 MMS went out H3318 W-VQY3MS into H413 PREP the field H7704 D-NMS to gather H3950 herbs H219 , and found H4672 W-VQY3MS a wild H7704 vine H1612 , and gathered H3950 thereof H4480 M-PREP-3MS wild H7704 gourds H6498 his lap H899 full H4393 , and came H935 W-VQY3MS and shred H6398 them into H413 PREP the pot H5518 of pottage H5138 : for H3588 CONJ they knew H3045 them not H3808 NADV .
40 So they poured out H3332 for the men H376 NMS to eat H398 . And it came to pass H1961 W-VQY3MS , as they were eating H398 of the pottage H5138 , that they H1992 cried out H6817 , and said H559 , O thou man H376 NMS of God H430 D-EDP , there is death H4194 NMS in the pot H5518 . And they could H3201 not H3808 W-NPAR eat H398 L-VQFC thereof .
41 But he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Then bring H3947 meal H7058 . And he cast H7993 it into H413 PREP the pot H5518 ; and he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Pour out H3332 for the people H5971 , that they may eat H398 . And there was H1961 VQQ3MS no H3808 W-NPAR harm H1697 VQPMS in the pot H5518 .
42 And there came H935 VQPMS a man H376 W-NMS from Baal H1190 - shalisha , and brought H935 W-VHY3MS the man H376 L-NMS of God H430 D-EDP bread H3899 NMS of the firstfruits H1061 , twenty H6242 loaves H3899 NMS of barley H8184 , and full ears of corn H3759 in the husk H6861 thereof . And he said H559 W-VQY3MS , Give H5414 unto the people H5971 , that they may eat H398 .
43 And his servitor H8334 said H559 W-VQY3MS , What H4100 IGAT , should I set H5414 VQY1MS this H2088 DPRO before H6440 L-CMP a hundred H3967 MFS men H376 NMS ? He said H559 W-VQY3MS again , Give H5414 the people H5971 , that they may eat H398 : for H3588 CONJ thus H3541 saith H559 W-VQY3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , They shall eat H398 VQFA , and shall leave H3498 thereof .
44 So he set H5414 W-VQQ3MS it before H6440 L-CMP-3MP them , and they did eat H398 W-VQY3MP , and left H3498 thereof , according to the word H1697 K-NMS of the LORD H3068 NAME-4MS .
