1. And an angel of the Lord went up from Galgal to the Heb. Mykb place of weeping, and to Baethel, and to the house of Israel, and said to them, Thus says the Lord, I brought you up out of Egypt, and I brought you into the land which I sware to your fathers; and I said, I will never break my covenant that I have made with you.

2. And ye shall make no covenant with them that dwell in this land, neither shall ye worship their gods; but ye shall destroy their graven images, ye shall pull down their altars: but ye hearkened not to my voice, for ye did these things.

2. And ye H859 shall make H3772 no H3808 league H1285 with the inhabitants H3427 of this H2063 land H776 ; ye shall throw down H5422 their altars H4196 : but ye have not H3808 obeyed H8085 my voice H6963 : why H4100 have ye done H6213 this H2063 ?

3. And I said, I will not drive them out from before you, but they shall be for a Gr. distresses distress to you, and their gods shall be to you for an offence.
|
3. Wherefore I also H1571 said H559 , I will not H3808 drive them out H1644 H853 from before H4480 H6440 you ; but they shall be H1961 as thorns in your sides H6654 , and their gods H430 shall be H1961 a snare H4170 unto you.

4. And it came to pass when the angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voice, and wept.
|
4. And it came to pass H1961 , when the angel H4397 of the LORD H3068 spoke H1696 H853 these H428 words H1697 unto H413 all H3605 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , that the people H5971 lifted up H5375 H853 their voice H6963 , and wept H1058 .

5. And they named the name of that place Weepings; and they sacrificed there to the Lord.
|
5. And they called H7121 the name H8034 of that H1931 place H4725 Bochim H1066 : and they sacrificed H2076 there H8033 unto the LORD H3068 .
|
|
6. And Joshua dismissed the people, and they went every man to his inheritance, to inherit the land.
|
6. And when Joshua H3091 had let H853 the people H5971 go H7971 , the children H1121 of Israel H3478 went H1980 every man H376 unto his inheritance H5159 to possess H3423 H853 the land H776 .

|
7. And the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders that lived many days with Joshua, as many as knew all the great work of the Lord, what things he had wrought in Israel.

8. And Joshua the son of Naue, the servant of the Lord, died, Gr. son of a hundred and ten years; Hebraism a hundred and ten years old.

8. And Joshua H3091 the son H1121 of Nun H5126 , the servant H5650 of the LORD H3068 , died H4191 , being a hundred H3967 and ten H6235 years H8141 old H1121 .

9. And they buried him in the border of his inheritance, in Thamnathares, in mount Ephraim, on the north of the mountain of Gaas.
|
9. And they buried H6912 him in the border H1366 of his inheritance H5159 in Timnath H8556 -heres , in the mount H2022 of Ephraim H669 , on the north side H4480 H6828 of the hill H2022 Gaash H1608 .

10. And all that generation were laid to their fathers: and another generation rose up after them, who knew not the Lord, nor yet the work which he wrought in Israel.

11. And the children of Israel wrought evil before the Lord, and served Baalim.

12. And they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who brought them out of the land of Egypt, and walked after other gods, of the gods of the nations round about them; and they worshipped them.
|

13. And they provoked the Lord, and forsook him, and served Baal and the Astartes.

14. And the Lord was very angry with Israel; and he gave them into the hands of the spoilers, and they spoiled them; and he sold them into the hands of their enemies round about, and they could not any longer resist their enemies,

15. among whomsoever they went; and the hand of the Lord was against them for evil, as the Lord spoke, and as the Lord sware to them; and he greatly afflicted them.

16. And the Lord raised up judges, and the Lord save them out of the hands of them that spoiled them: and yet they hearkened not to the judges,

16. Nevertheless the LORD H3068 raised up H6965 judges H8199 , which delivered H3467 them out of the hand H4480 H3027 of those that spoiled H8154 them.

|
17. for they went a whoring after other gods, and worshipped them; and they turned quickly out of the way in which their fathers walked to hearken to the words of the Lord; they did not so.
|

And yet H1571 they would not H3808 hearken H8085 unto H413 their judges H8199 , but H3588 they went a whoring H2181 after H310 other H312 gods H430 , and bowed themselves H7812 unto them : they turned H5493 quickly H4118 out of H4480 the way H1870 which H834 their fathers H1 walked H1980 in, obeying H8085 the commandments H4687 of the LORD H3068 ; but they did H6213 not H3808 so H3651 .

18. And because the Lord raised them up judges, so the Lord was with the judge, and saved them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord Gr. repented; this word seems generally to stand for Mxn was moved at their groaning by reason of them that besieged them and afflicted them.

18. And when H3588 the LORD H3068 raised them up H6965 judges H8199 , then the LORD H3068 was H1961 with H5973 the judge H8199 , and delivered H3467 them out of the hand H4480 H3027 of their enemies H341 all H3605 the days H3117 of the judge H8199 : for H3588 it repented H5162 the LORD H3068 because of their groanings H4480 H5009 by reason of them H4480 H6440 that oppressed H3905 them and vexed H1766 them.

19. And it came to pass when the judge died, that they went back, and again corrupted themselves worse than their fathers to go after other gods to serve them an to worship them: they abandoned not their devices nor their stubborn ways.

19. And it came to pass H1961 , when the judge H8199 was dead H4191 , that they returned H7725 , and corrupted H7843 themselves more than their fathers H4480 H1 , in following H1980 H310 other H312 gods H430 to serve H5647 them , and to bow down H7812 unto them ; they ceased H5307 not H3808 from their own doings H4480 H4611 , nor from their stubborn way H4480 H1 870 H7186 .

20. And the Lord was very angry with Israel, and said, Forasmuch as this nation has forsaken my covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not hearkened to my voice,

20. And the anger H639 of the LORD H3068 was hot H2734 against Israel H3478 ; and he said H559 , Because H3282 that H834 this H2088 people H1471 hath transgressed H5674 H853 my covenant H1285 which H834 I commanded H6680 H853 their fathers H1 , and have not H3808 hearkened H8085 unto my voice H6963 ;

21. therefore I will not any more cast out a man of the nations before their face, which Joshua the son of Naue left in the land. And the Lord left them,
|
21. I H589 also H1571 will not H3808 henceforth H3254 drive out H3423 any H376 from before H4480 H6440 them of H4480 the nations H1471 which H834 Joshua H3091 left H5800 when he died H4191 :

22. to prove Israel with them, whether they would keep the way of the Lord, to walk in it, as their fathers kept it, or no.
|
22. That H4616 through them I may prove H5254 H853 Israel H3478 , whether they H1992 will keep H8104 H853 the way H1870 of the LORD H3068 to walk H1980 therein, as H834 their fathers H1 did keep H8104 it , or H518 not H3808 .

|
23. So the Lord Gr. Or, left will leave these nations, so as not to cast them out suddenly; and he delivered them not into the hand of Joshua.

23. Therefore the LORD H3068 left H5117 H853 those H428 nations H1471 , without H1115 driving them out H3423 hastily H4118 ; neither H3808 delivered H5414 he them into the hand H3027 of Joshua H3091 .
