Jeremiah 37:9 (ERVEN) Easy to Read - English

1 Nebuchadnezzar was the king of Babylon. He appointed Zedekiah son of Josiah to be the king of Judah in the place of Jehoiachin son of Jehoiakim.
2 But Zedekiah did not pay attention to the messages the Lord had given to Jeremiah the prophet. And Zedekiah's servants and the people of Judah did not pay attention to the Lord's messages.
3 King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah the prophet with a message. This was the message they brought to Jeremiah: "Jeremiah, pray to the Lord our God for us."
4 (At that time Jeremiah had not yet been put into prison, so he was free to go anywhere he wanted.
5 Also at that time Pharaoh's army had marched from Egypt toward Judah. The Babylonian army had surrounded the city of Jerusalem in order to defeat it. Then they had heard about the army from Egypt marching toward them. So the army from Babylon left Jerusalem to fight with the army from Egypt.)
6 The message from the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet:
7 "This is what the Lord, the God of the people of Israel, says: 'Jehucal and Zephaniah, I know that King Zedekiah of Judah sent you to me to ask questions. Tell King Zedekiah this: Pharaoh's army marched out of Egypt to come here to help you against the army of Babylon. But Pharaoh's army will go back to Egypt.
8 After that, the army from Babylon will come back here and attack Jerusalem. Then they will capture and burn it.'
9 This is what the Lord says: 'People of Jerusalem, don't fool yourselves. Don't say to yourselves, "The army of Babylon will surely leave us alone." They will not.
10 People of Jerusalem, even if you could defeat all of the Babylonian army that is attacking you, there would still be a few wounded men left in their tents. Even those few wounded men would come out of their tents and burn Jerusalem down.'"
11 When the Babylonian army left Jerusalem to fight the army of the Pharaoh of Egypt,
12 Jeremiah wanted to travel from Jerusalem to the land of Benjamin. He wanted to be there for a division of some property that belonged to his family.
13 But when Jeremiah got to the Benjamin Gate of Jerusalem, the captain in charge of the guards arrested him. The captain's name was Irijah son of Shelemiah. Shelemiah was the son of Hananiah. So Irijah the captain arrested Jeremiah and said, "Jeremiah, you are leaving us to join the Babylonian side."
14 Jeremiah said to Irijah, "That is not true! I am not leaving to join the Babylonians." But Irijah refused to listen to Jeremiah. And Irijah arrested Jeremiah and took him to the royal officials of Jerusalem.
15 Those officials were very angry with Jeremiah. They gave an order for Jeremiah to be beaten. Then they put him in a prison. The prison was in the house of Jonathan, a scribe for the king of Judah. His house had been made into a prison.
16 They put Jeremiah into a cell under the house of Jonathan. The cell was in a dungeon under the ground. Jeremiah was there for a long time.
17 Then King Zedekiah sent for Jeremiah and had him brought to the palace. Zedekiah talked to Jeremiah in private. He asked Jeremiah, "Is there any message from the Lord?" Jeremiah answered, "Yes, there is a message from the Lord. Zedekiah, you will be given to the king of Babylon."
18 Then Jeremiah said to King Zedekiah, "What have I done wrong? What crime have I done against you or your officials or the people of Jerusalem? Why have you thrown me into prison?
19 King Zedekiah, where are your prophets now? They told you a false message. They said, 'The king of Babylon will not attack you or this land of Judah.'
20 But now, my lord, king of Judah, please listen to me. Please let me bring my request to you. This is what I ask: Don't send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe. If you send me back, I will die there."
21 So King Zedekiah gave orders for Jeremiah to be put under guard in the courtyard. And he ordered that Jeremiah should be given bread from the street bakers. He was given bread until there was no more bread in the city. So Jeremiah stayed under guard in the courtyard.

2 But neither H3808 W-NPAR he H1931 PPRO-3MS , nor his servants H5650 W-CMS-3MS , nor the people H5971 of the land H776 D-GFS , did hearken H8085 unto H413 PREP the words H1697 CMP of the LORD H3068 EDS , which H834 RPRO he spoke H1696 VPQ3MS by H3027 B-CFS the prophet H5030 Jeremiah H3414 .
3 And Zedekiah H6667 the king H4428 D-NMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS Jehucal H3081 the son H1121 CMS of Shelemiah H8018 and Zephaniah H6846 the son H1121 CMS of Maaseiah H4641 the priest H3548 to H413 PREP the prophet H5030 Jeremiah H3414 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Pray H6419 now H4994 IJEC unto H413 PREP the LORD H3068 EDS our God H430 for H1157 us .
4 Now Jeremiah H3414 came in H935 VQPMS and went out H3318 among H8432 B-NMS the people H5971 : for they had not H3808 W-NPAR put H5414 him into prison H1004 CMS .
5 Then Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s army H2428 was come forth H3318 VQQ3MS out of Egypt H4714 : and when the Chaldeans H3778 that besieged H6696 Jerusalem H3389 heard H8085 tidings H8088 of them , they departed H5927 from PREP Jerusalem H3389 .
6 Then came H1961 W-VPY3MS the word H1697 CMS of the LORD H3068 EDS unto H413 PREP the prophet H5030 Jeremiah H3414 , saying H559 L-VQFC ,
7 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS , the God H430 CDP of Israel H3478 ; Thus H3541 shall ye say H559 VQY2MP to H413 PREP the king H4428 NMS of Judah H3063 , that sent H7971 you unto H413 PREP me to inquire H1875 of me ; Behold H2009 IJEC , Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s army H2428 , which is come forth H3318 to help H5833 you , shall return H7725 VQQ3MS to Egypt H4714 into their own land H776 L-CFS-3MS .
8 And the Chaldeans H3778 shall come again H7725 , and fight H3898 against H5921 PREP this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS , and take H3920 it , and burn H8313 it with fire H784 .
9 Thus H3541 saith H559 VQQ3MS the LORD H3068 EDS ; Deceive H5377 not H408 NPAR yourselves H5315 , saying H559 L-VQFC , The Chaldeans H3778 shall surely depart H1980 from us : for H3588 CONJ they shall not H3808 NADV depart H1980 .
10 For H3588 CONJ though H518 PART ye had smitten H5221 the whole H3605 NMS army H2428 of the Chaldeans H3778 TMP that fight H3898 against H854 PART-2MP you , and there remained H7604 but wounded H1856 men H376 NMS among them , yet should they rise H6965 VQY3MP every man H376 NMS in his tent H168 B-CMS-3MS , and burn H8313 this H2063 D-DFS city H5892 D-GFS with fire H784 .
11 And it came to pass H1961 W-VQQ3MS , that when the army H2428 of the Chaldeans H3778 was broken up H5927 from M-PREP Jerusalem H3389 for fear H6440 M-CMP of Pharaoh H6547 EMS \'s army H2428 ,
12 Then Jeremiah H3414 went forth H3318 W-VQY3MS out of Jerusalem H3389 to go H1980 L-VQFC into the land H776 GFS of Benjamin H1144 , to separate himself H2505 thence H8033 M-ADV in the midst H8432 B-NMS of the people H5971 D-NMS .
13 And when he H1931 PPRO-3MS was H1961 W-VQY3MS in the gate H8179 of Benjamin H1144 , a captain H1167 CMS of the ward H6488 was there H8033 W-ADV , whose name H8034 was Irijah H3376 , the son H1121 of Shelemiah H8018 , the son H1121 of Hananiah H2608 ; and he took H8610 Jeremiah H3414 the prophet H5030 , saying H559 L-VQFC , Thou H859 PPRO-2MS fallest away H5307 to H413 PREP the Chaldeans H3778 .
14 Then said H559 W-VQY3MS Jeremiah H3414 , It is false H8267 NMS ; I fall H5307 VQPMS not H369 away to H5921 PREP the Chaldeans H3778 . But he hearkened H8085 not H3808 W-NPAR to H413 PREP-3MS him : so Irijah H3376 took H8610 Jeremiah H3414 , and brought H935 him to H413 PREP the princes H8269 .
15 Wherefore the princes H8269 were wroth H7107 with H5921 PREP Jeremiah H3414 , and smote H5221 him , and put H5414 him in prison H1004 CMS in the house H1004 CMS of Jonathan H3083 the scribe H5608 : for H3588 CONJ they had made H6213 VQQ3MP that the prison H1004 .
16 When H3588 CONJ Jeremiah H3414 was entered H935 into H413 PREP the dungeon H1004 CMS , and into H413 PREP the cabins H2588 , and Jeremiah H3414 had remained H3427 there H8033 ADV many H7227 AMP days H3117 NMP ;
17 Then Zedekiah H6667 the king H4428 NMS sent H7971 W-VQY3MS , and took H3947 him out : and the king H4428 NMS asked H7592 him secretly H5643 BD-NMS in his house H1004 B-CMS-3MS , and said H559 W-VQY3MS , Is there H3426 I-ADV any word H1697 VQPMS from the LORD H3068 EDS ? And Jeremiah H3414 said H559 W-VQY3MS , There is H3426 PART : for , said H559 W-VQY3MS he , thou shalt be delivered H5414 into the hand H3027 B-CFS of the king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS .
18 Moreover Jeremiah H3414 said H559 W-VQY3MS unto H413 PREP king H4428 D-NMS Zedekiah H6667 , What H4100 IPRO have I offended H2398 against thee , or against thy servants H5650 , or against this H2088 D-PMS people H5971 , that H3588 CONJ ye have put H5414 me in H413 PREP prison H1004 CMS ?
19 Where H346 are now your prophets H5030 which H834 RPRO prophesied H5012 unto you , saying H559 L-VQFC , The king H4428 NMS of Babylon H894 LFS shall not H3808 ADV come H935 VQY3MS against H5921 PREP-2MP you , nor against H5921 W-PREP this H2063 land H776 D-GFS ?
20 Therefore hear H8085 VQI2MS now H6258 W-ADV , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , O my lord H113 the king H4428 D-NMS : let my supplication H8467 , I pray thee H4994 IJEC , be accepted H5307 before H6440 L-CMP-2MS thee ; that thou cause me not H408 W-NPAR to return H7725 to the house H1004 CMS of Jonathan H3083 the scribe H5608 , lest H3808 W-NPAR I die H4191 VQY1MS there H8033 ADV .
21 Then Zedekiah H6667 the king H4428 D-NMS commanded H6680 that they should commit H6485 Jeremiah H3414 into the court H2691 of the prison H4307 , and that they should give H5414 him daily H3117 a piece H3603 of bread H3899 NMS out of the bakers H644 \' street H2351 , until H5704 PREP all H3605 NMS the bread H3899 in H4480 PREP the city H5892 D-GFS were spent H8552 . Thus Jeremiah H3414 remained H3427 W-VQY3MS in the court H2691 of the prison H4307 .
