1. The Lord said to Moses at Mount Sinai,
1. And the LORD H3068 spoke H1696 unto H413 Moses H4872 in mount H2022 Sinai H5514 , saying H559 ,
2. "Tell the people of Israel this: 'When you enter the land I will give you, let it have a special time of rest, to honor the Lord.
2. Speak H1696 unto H413 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , and say H559 unto H413 them, When H3588 ye come H935 into H413 the land H776 which H834 I H589 give H5414 you , then shall the land H776 keep H7673 a sabbath H7676 unto the LORD H3068 .
3. You may plant seed in your field for six years, and you may trim your vineyards for six years and bring in their fruits.
3. Six H8337 years H8141 thou shalt sow H2232 thy field H7704 , and six H8337 years H8141 thou shalt prune H2168 thy vineyard H3754 , and gather in H622 H853 the fruit H8393 thereof;
4. But during the seventh year, you must let the land rest. This will be a special time to honor the Lord. You must not plant seed in your field or trim your vineyards.
4. But in the seventh H7637 year H8141 shall be H1961 a sabbath H7676 of rest H7677 unto the land H776 , a sabbath H7676 for the LORD H3068 : thou shalt neither H3808 sow H2232 thy field H7704 , nor H3808 prune H2168 thy vineyard H3754 .
5. You must not cut the crops that grow by themselves after harvest, or gather the grapes from your vines that are not trimmed. The land will have a year of rest.
5. H853 That which groweth of its own accord H5599 of thy harvest H7105 thou shalt not H3808 reap H7114 , neither H3808 gather H1219 the grapes H6025 of thy vine undressed H5139 : for it is H1961 a year H8141 of rest H7677 unto the land H776 .
6. "'You may eat whatever the land produces during that year of rest. It will be food for your men and women servants, for your hired workers, and for the foreigners living in your country.
6. And the sabbath H7676 of the land H776 shall be H1961 meat H402 for you ; for thee , and for thy servant H5650 , and for thy maid H519 , and for thy hired servant H7916 , and for thy stranger H8453 that sojourneth H1481 with H5973 thee,
7. It will also be food for your cattle and the wild animals of your land. Whatever the land produces may be eaten.
7. And for thy cattle H929 , and for the beast H2416 that H834 are in thy land H776 , shall all H3605 the increase H8393 thereof be H1961 meat H398 .
8. "'Count off seven groups of seven years, or forty-nine years. During that time there will be seven years of rest for the land.
8. And thou shalt number H5608 seven H7651 sabbaths H7676 of years H8141 unto thee, seven H7651 times H6471 seven H7651 years H8141 ; and the space H3117 of the seven H7651 sabbaths H7676 of years H8141 shall be H1961 unto thee forty H705 and nine H8672 years H8141 .
9. On the Day of Cleansing, you must blow the horn of a male sheep; this will be on the tenth day of the seventh month. You must blow the horn through the whole country.
9. Then shalt thou cause the trumpet H7782 of the jubilee H8643 to sound H5674 on the tenth H6218 day of the seventh H7637 month H2320 , in the day H3117 of atonement H3725 shall ye make the trumpet H7782 sound H5674 throughout all H3605 your land H776 .
10. Make the fiftieth year a special year, and announce freedom for all the people living in your country. This time will be called Jubilee. You will each go back to your own property, each to your own family and family group.
10. And ye shall hallow H6942 H853 the fiftieth H2572 year H8141 , and proclaim H7121 liberty H1865 throughout all the land H776 unto all H3605 the inhabitants H3427 thereof: it H1931 shall be H1961 a jubilee H3104 unto you ; and ye shall return H7725 every man H376 unto H413 his possession H272 , and ye shall return H7725 every man H376 unto H413 his family H4940 .
11. The fiftieth year will be a special time for you to celebrate. Don't plant seeds, or harvest the crops that grow by themselves, or gather grapes from the vines that are not trimmed.
11. A jubilee H3104 shall that H1931 fiftieth H2572 year H8141 be H1961 unto you : ye shall not H3808 sow H2232 , neither H3808 reap H7114 H853 that which groweth of itself H5599 in it, nor H3808 gather H1219 the grapes in it H853 of thy vine undressed H5139 .
12. That year is Jubilee; it will be a holy time for you. You may eat only the crops that come from the field.
12. For H3588 it H1931 is the jubilee H3104 ; it shall be H1961 holy H6944 unto you : ye shall eat H398 H853 the increase H8393 thereof out of H4480 the field H7704 .
13. In the year of Jubilee you each must go back to your own property.
13. In the year H8141 of this H2063 jubilee H3104 ye shall return H7725 every man H376 unto H413 his possession H272 .
14. "'If you sell your land to your neighbor, or if you buy land from your neighbor, don't cheat each other.
14. And if H3588 thou sell H4376 aught H4465 unto thy neighbor H5997 , or H176 buyest H7069 aught of thy neighbor's hand H4480 H3027 H5997 , ye shall not H408 oppress H3238 one H376 H853 another H251 :
15. If you want to buy your neighbor's land, count the number of years since the last Jubilee, and use that number to decide the right price. If your neighbor sells the land to you, count the number of years left for harvesting crops, and use that number to decide the right price.
15. According to the number H4557 of years H8141 after H310 the jubilee H3104 thou shalt buy H7069 of H4480 H854 thy neighbor H5997 , and according unto the number H4557 of years H8141 of the fruits H8393 he shall sell H4376 unto thee:
16. If there are many years, the price will be high. But if there are only a few years, lower the price, because your neighbor is really selling only a few crops to you.
16. According to H6310 the multitude H7230 of years H8141 thou shalt increase H7235 the price H4736 thereof , and according to H6310 the fewness H4591 of years H8141 thou shalt diminish H4591 the price H4736 of it: for H3588 according to the number H4557 of the years of the fruits H8393 doth he H1931 sell H4376 unto thee.
17. You must not cheat each other, but you must respect your God. I am the Lord your God.
17. Ye shall not H3808 therefore oppress H3238 H853 one H376 another H5997 ; but thou shalt fear thy God H3372 H4480 H430 : for H3588 I H589 am the LORD H3068 your God H430 .
18. "'Remember my laws and rules, and obey them so that you will live safely in the land.
18. Wherefore ye shall do H6213 H853 my statutes H2708 , and keep H8104 my judgments H4941 , and do H6213 them ; and ye shall dwell H3427 in H5921 the land H776 in safety H983 .
19. The land will give good crops to you, and you will eat as much as you want and live safely in the land.
19. And the land H776 shall yield H5414 her fruit H6529 , and ye shall eat H398 your fill H7648 , and dwell H3427 therein H5921 in safety H983 .
20. "'But you might ask, "If we don't plant seeds or gather crops, what will we eat the seventh year?"
20. And if H3588 ye shall say H559 , What H4100 shall we eat H398 the seventh H7637 year H8141 ? behold H2005 , we shall not H3808 sow H2232 , nor H3808 gather in H622 H853 our increase H8393 :
21. I will send you such a great blessing during the sixth year that the land will produce enough crops for three years.
21. Then I will command H6680 H853 my blessing H1293 upon you in the sixth H8345 year H8141 , and it shall bring forth H6213 H853 fruit H8393 for three H7969 years H8141 .
22. When you plant in the eighth year, you will still be eating from the old crop; you will eat the old crop until the harvest of the ninth year.
22. And ye shall sow H2232 the H853 eighth H8066 year H8141 , and eat H398 yet of H4480 old H3465 fruit H8393 until H5704 the ninth H8671 year H8141 ; until H5704 her fruits H8393 come in H935 ye shall eat H398 of the old H3465 store .
23. "'The land really belongs to me, so you can't sell it for all time. You are only foreigners and travelers living for a while on my land.
23. The land H776 shall not H3808 be sold H4376 forever H6783 : for H3588 the land H776 is mine; for H3588 ye H859 are strangers H1616 and sojourners H8453 with H5973 me.
24. People might sell their land, but it must always be possible for the family to get its land back.
24. And in all H3605 the land H776 of your possession H272 ye shall grant H5414 a redemption H1353 for the land H776 .
25. If a person in your country becomes very poor and sells some land, then close relatives must come and buy it back.
25. If H3588 thy brother H251 be waxen poor H4134 , and hath sold away H4376 some of his possession H4480 H272 , and if any of his kin H7138 H413 come H935 to redeem H1350 it , then shall he redeem H1350 H853 that which his brother sold H4465 H251 .
26. If there is not a close relative to buy the land back, but if the person makes enough money to be able to buy it back,
26. And if H3588 the man H376 have H1961 none to redeem H3808 H1350 it , and himself H5381 H3027 be able H4672 H1767 to redeem H1353 it;
27. the years must be counted since the land was sold. That number must be used to decide how much the first owner should pay back the one who bought it. Then the land will belong to the first owner again.
27. Then let him count H2803 H853 the years H8141 of the sale H4465 thereof , and restore H7725 H853 the surplus H5736 unto the man H376 to whom H834 he sold H4376 it ; that he may return H7725 unto his possession H272 .
28. But if there is not enough money to buy it back, the one who bought it will keep it until the year of Jubilee. During that celebration, the land will go back to the first owner's family.
28. But if H518 he H3027 be not able H3808 H4672 H1767 to restore H7725 it to him , then that which is sold H4465 shall remain H1961 in the hand H3027 of him that hath bought H7069 it until H5704 the year H8141 of jubilee H3104 : and in the jubilee H3104 it shall go out H3318 , and he shall return H7725 unto his possession H272 .
29. "'If someone sells a home in a walled city, for a full year after it is sold, the person has the right to buy it back.
29. And if H3588 a man H376 sell H4376 a dwelling H4186 house H1004 in a walled H2346 city H5892 , then he may redeem H1961 H1353 it within H5704 a whole H8552 year H8141 after it is sold H4465 ; within a full year H3117 may he redeem H1961 H1353 it.
30. But if the owner does not buy back the house before a full year is over, it will belong to the one who bought it and to his future sons. The house will not go back to the first owner at Jubilee.
30. And if H518 it be not H3808 redeemed H1350 within H5704 the space H4390 of a full H8549 year H8141 , then the house H1004 that H834 is in the walled H834 H2346 city H5892 shall be established H6965 forever H6783 to him that bought H7069 it throughout his generations H1755 : it shall not H3808 go out H3318 in the jubilee H3104 .
31. But houses in small towns without walls are like open country; they can be bought back, and they must be returned to their first owner at Jubilee.
31. But the houses H1004 of the villages H2691 which H834 have no H369 wall H2346 round about H5439 them shall be counted H2803 as H5921 the fields H7704 of the country H776 : they may be H1961 redeemed H1353 , and they shall go out H3318 in the jubilee H3104 .
32. "'The Levites may always buy back their houses in the cities that belong to them.
32. Notwithstanding the cities H5892 of the Levites H3881 , and the houses H1004 of the cities H5892 of their possession H272 , may the Levites H3881 redeem H1961 H1353 at any time H5769 .
33. If someone buys a house from a Levite, that house in the Levites' city will again belong to the Levites in the Jubilee. This is because houses in Levite cities belong to the people of Levi; the Israelites gave these cities to them.
33. And if a man H834 purchase H1350 of H4480 the Levites H3881 , then the house H1004 that was sold H4465 , and the city H5892 of his possession H272 , shall go out H3318 in the year of jubilee H3104 : for H3588 the houses H1004 of the cities H5892 of the Levites H3881 are their possession H272 among H8432 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 .
34. Also the fields and pastures around the Levites' cities cannot be sold, because those fields belong to the Levites forever.
34. But the field H7704 of the suburbs H4054 of their cities H5892 may not H3808 be sold H4376 ; for H3588 it H1931 is their perpetual H5769 possession H272 .
35. "'If anyone from your country becomes too poor to support himself, help him to live among you as you would a stranger or foreigner.
35. And if H3588 thy brother H251 be waxen poor H4134 , and fallen in decay H4131 H3027 with H5973 thee ; then thou shalt relieve H2388 him: yea, though he be a stranger H1616 , or a sojourner H8453 ; that he may live H2421 with H5973 thee.
36. Do not charge him any interest on money you loan to him, but respect your God; let the poor live among you.
36. Take H3947 thou no H408 usury H5392 of H4480 H854 him , or increase H8636 : but fear thy God H3372 H4480 H430 ; that thy brother H251 may live H2421 with H5973 thee.
37. Don't lend him money for interest, and don't try to make a profit from the food he buys.
37. Thou shalt not H3808 give H5414 him H853 thy money H3701 upon usury H5392 , nor H3808 lend H5414 him thy victuals H400 for increase H4768 .
38. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give the land of Canaan to you and to become your God.
38. I H589 am the LORD H3068 your God H430 , which H834 brought you forth H3318 H853 out of the land H4480 H776 of Egypt H4714 , to give H5414 you H853 the land H776 of Canaan H3667 , and to be H1961 your God H430 .
39. "'If anyone from your country becomes very poor and sells himself as a slave to you, you must not make him work like a slave.
39. And if H3588 thy brother H251 that dwelleth by H5973 thee be waxen poor H4134 , and be sold H4376 unto thee ; thou shalt not H3808 compel him to serve H5647 as a bondservant H5656 H5650 :
40. He will be like a hired worker and a visitor with you until the year of Jubilee.
40. But as a hired servant H7916 , and as a sojourner H8453 , he shall be H1961 with H5973 thee, and shall serve H5647 H5973 thee unto H5704 the year H8141 of jubilee H3104 :
41. Then he may leave you, take his children, and go back to his family and the land of his ancestors.
41. And then shall he depart H3318 from H4480 H5973 thee, both he H1931 and his children H1121 with H5973 him , and shall return H7725 unto H413 his own family H4940 , and unto H413 the possession H272 of his fathers H1 shall he return H7725 .
42. This is because the Israelites are my servants, and I brought them out of slavery in Egypt. They must not become slaves again.
42. For H3588 they H1992 are my servants H5650 , which H834 I brought forth H3318 out of the land H4480 H776 of Egypt H4714 : they shall not H3808 be sold H4376 as bondmen H4466 H5650 .
43. You must not rule this person cruelly, but you must respect your God.
43. Thou shalt not H3808 rule H7287 over him with rigor H6531 ; but shalt fear thy God H3372 H4480 H430 .
44. "'Your men and women slaves must come from other nations around you; from them you may buy slaves.
44. Both thy bondmen H5650 , and thy bondmaids H519 , which H834 thou shalt have H1961 , shall be of H4480 H854 the heathen H1471 that H834 are round about H5439 you; of H4480 them shall ye buy H7069 bondmen H5650 and bondmaids H519 .
45. Also you may buy as slaves children from the families of foreigners living in your land. These child slaves will belong to you,
45. Moreover H1571 of the children H4480 H1121 of the strangers H8453 that do sojourn H1481 among H5973 you, of H4480 them shall ye buy H7069 , and of their families H4480 H4940 that H834 are with H5973 you, which H834 they begot H3205 in your land H776 : and they shall be H1961 your possession H272 .
46. and you may even pass them on to your children after you die; you can make them slaves forever. But you must not rule cruelly over your own people, the Israelites.
46. And ye shall take them as an inheritance H5157 H853 for your children H1121 after H310 you , to inherit H3423 them for a possession H272 ; they shall be your bondmen H5647 forever H5769 : but over your brethren H251 the children H1121 of Israel H3478 , ye shall not H3808 rule H7287 one H376 over another H251 with rigor H6531 .
47. "'Suppose a foreigner or visitor among you becomes rich. If someone in your country becomes so poor that he has to sell himself as a slave to the foreigner living among you or to a member of the foreigner's family,
47. And if H3588 a sojourner H3027 H1616 or stranger H8453 wax rich H5381 by H5973 thee , and thy brother H251 that dwelleth by H5973 him wax poor H4134 , and sell himself H4376 unto the stranger H1616 or sojourner H8453 by H5973 thee, or H176 to the stock H6133 of the stranger H1616 's family H4940 :
48. the poor person has the right to be bought back and become free. One of his relatives may buy him back:
48. After that H310 he is sold H4376 he may be H1961 redeemed again H1353 ; one H259 of his brethren H4480 H251 may redeem H1350 him:
49. His uncle, his uncle's son, or any one of his close relatives may buy him back. Or, if he gets enough money, he may pay the money to free himself.
49. Either H176 his uncle H1730 , or H176 his uncle H1730 's son H1121 , may redeem H1350 him, or H176 any that is nigh H4480 H7607 of kin H1320 unto him of his family H4480 H4940 may redeem H1350 him; or H176 if he be able H5381 H3027 , he may redeem himself H1350 .
50. "'He and the one who bought him must count the time from when he sold himself up to the next year of Jubilee. Use that number to decide the price, because the person really only hired himself out for a certain number of years.
50. And he shall reckon H2803 with H5973 him that bought H7069 him from the year H4480 H8141 that he was sold H4376 to him unto H5704 the year H8141 of jubilee H3104 : and the price H3701 of his sale H4465 shall be H1961 according unto the number H4557 of years H8141 , according to the time H3117 of a hired servant H7916 shall it be H1961 with H5973 him.
51. If there are still many years before the year of Jubilee, the person must pay back a large part of the price.
51. If H518 there be yet H5750 many H7227 years H8141 behind , according unto H6310 them he shall give again H7725 the price of his redemption H1353 out of the money H4480 H3701 that he was bought H4736 for.
52. If there are only a few years left until Jubilee, the person must pay a small part of the first price.
52. And if H518 there remain H7604 but few H4592 years H8141 unto H5704 the year H8141 of jubilee H3104 , then he shall count H2803 with him, and according unto H6310 his years H8141 shall he give him again H7725 H853 the price of his redemption H1353 .
53. But he will live like a hired person with the foreigner every year; don't let the foreigner rule cruelly over him.
53. And as a yearly H8141 H8141 hired servant H7916 shall he be H1961 with H5973 him: and the other shall not H3808 rule with rigor over H7287 H6531 him in thy sight H5869 .
54. "'Even if no one buys him back, at the year of Jubilee, he and his children will become free.
54. And if H518 he be not H3808 redeemed H1350 in these H428 years , then he shall go out H3318 in the year H8141 of jubilee H3104 , both he H1931 , and his children H1121 with H5973 him.
55. This is because the people of Israel are servants to me. They are my servants, whom I brought out of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.
55. For H3588 unto me the children H1121 of Israel H3478 are servants H5650 ; they H1992 are my servants H5650 whom H834 H853 I brought forth H3318 out of the land H4480 H776 of Egypt H4714 : I H589 am the LORD H3068 your God H430 .
